US Government Shutdown Moves into Day Three: Legislators Show Minimal Movement On Deal

The federal government continued closed for a third consecutive day on the weekend's eve, with little sign that legislators had advanced toward reaching a settlement to resume operations.

Upper Chamber Gears Up for Key Ballots

The Senate is scheduled to meet in the late day to vote on competing Republican and Democratic proposals for extending funding over the next few weeks. However, neither proposal seems to have sufficient backing to surpass the Senate's sixty-vote threshold for passage.

This marks the first shutdown since 2019, and if the ballots fail, it will ensure that government agencies remain closed and workers remain on unpaid leave into the following week.

Root Causes of the Shutdown

Appropriations lapsed after late Tuesday night when Senate Democrats refused to supply the necessary votes to approve a GOP spending measure, instead insisting on compromises on medical care and additional spending priorities.

Federal closures could impact the American economy billions of dollars per week, experts suggest.

Financial and Political Fallout

The former president and GOP officials in the legislature have pushed back, and on Friday, the labor department withheld its monthly data on employment growth and joblessness, citing the shutdown.

The administration continued its policy of cancelling funding for initiatives in blue areas, with the office of management and budget revealing that $2.1bn for two transportation ventures in the Windy City had been suspended “to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting”.

Key Demands from Democrats

  • Reverse cuts to the government healthcare system for low-income and disabled citizens
  • Extend premium tax credits for Affordable Care Act plans
  • Restore funding eliminated from government-supported broadcasting
  • Halt the withholding of international assistance funds

Healthcare costs are expected to increase for about twenty million people if the credits are not renewed, while about ten million people may be deprived of medical coverage due to the cuts to Medicaid and similar initiatives.

Political Standoff Persists

The Senate majority leader has rejected negotiating over those terms until federal appropriations is restored. In an interview with NBC News, he indicated he was not talking with his Democratic counterpart, the minority leader.

“We are not distant, so if he wants to chat, he is aware where to locate me. But I think at this juncture currently, the matter is pretty clear-cut. I am uncertain that … discussion is going to accomplish a lot.”

His remarks echoed those of Mike Johnson, who said “I quite literally have no issues to negotiate” with the Democrats.

Democratic Stance Stays Firm

The minority party has shown no sign of altering its viewpoint. “Democrats are absolutely certain. We want to restart the government. We stand by hardworking federal civil servants. We want to find a bipartisan path forward. But it’s got to be an agreement that truly meets the needs of the American people,” House minority leader the minority leader told MSNBC.

Potential Cracks in Democratic Cohesion

It is uncertain if enough Democratic senators will persist in backing the party’s position. A few Democrats have voted to advance the GOP spending proposal, a division in the party that GOP leaders have said they will try to exploit.

Unusual Stakes and Threats

The former president has sought to make the stakes of this shutdown unusually high. In besides slashing funding in a way he has described as intended to penalize the opposition, he has threatened carrying out mass layoffs of government employees.

Politicized Communications Surfaces

A number of government departments have published biased and questionably lawful statements claiming their operations are curtailed due to “the Radical Left Democrat closure”. Sources at the education department say their automated email messages were altered without their permission to use rhetoric blaming the minority party.
